Introduction: The capacity to tolerate frustration during the sensitive period of adolescence, if accompanied by borderline personality symptoms, can be accompanied by destructive individual, family, and social consequences and the maintenance and exacerbation of symptoms. Accordingly, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of mentalization-based treatment on the dimensions of frustration tolerance in adolescents with borderline personality syndrome.
Method:The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a three-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population included all adolescents with borderline personality syndrome referring to mental health service centers in Isfahan in 1403. From the aforementioned population, 34 people were selected purposefully and based on the inclusion criteria and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (17 people in each group). The research instruments included the Borderline Personality Scale (Claridge and Brooks, 1984) and the Frustration Tolerance Questionnaire (Harrington, 2005). The experimental group received 20 sessions of mentalization intervention with a frequency of two sessions per week. Repeated measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test in SPSS version 26 were used to analyze the data.
Results: With a mean and standard deviation of age of 16.41 ± 1.06 in the experimental group, the results showed that the effectiveness of mentalization-based therapy on emotional intolerance, discomfort intolerance, achievement goal intolerance, and injustice intolerance was significant (P<0.01) and the effect sizes of each were 53.7, 57.2, 50.9, and 57.5, respectively, indicating a moderate level of intervention, and these effects remained stable in the follow-up phase.
Conclusion: It is suggested that mental health professionals in the field of adolescents should use this treatment as an effective intervention to manage and improve frustration tolerance in adolescents with borderline personality disorder.
