Abstract:   (155 Views)
Background: Frustration tolerance during the sensitive period of adolescence, when accompanied by borderline personality features, can be associated with detrimental individual, familial, and social outcomes, as well as the maintenance and exacerbation of borderline symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mentalization-based therapy (MBT) on dimensions of frustration tolerance in adolescents with borderline personality features.
methods: This semi-experimental study employed a pre-test–post-test design with a three-month follow-up and a control group. The population consisted of all adolescents with borderline personality features referred to mental health centers in Isfahan in 2024. Based on purposive sampling and inclusion criteria, 34 participants were selected and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (17 per group). Instruments included the Claridge and Brooks Borderline Personality Scale and the Harrington Frustration Tolerance Questionnaire. The experimental group received 20 sessions of MBT, twice a week, while the control group received no intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc tests in SPSS version 26.
Results: The mean age of participants in the experimental group was 16/41 ± 1/06 years. Results indicated that MBT significantly improved all dimensions of frustration tolerance, including emotional intolerance, discomfort intolerance, achievement goal intolerance, and injustice intolerance (P < 0/05). The effect sizes for these dimensions were 0/53, 0.57, 0/50, and 0/57, respectively, indicating a moderate intervention effect. These improvements were maintained at the follow-up stage.
Conclusion: MBT significantly enhanced various dimensions of frustration tolerance in adolescents with borderline personality features, and the effects remained stable over time. Therefore, this therapy may serve as an effective intervention for improving frustration tolerance in this population and can be applied by mental health professionals.
