The effectiveness of self-management program training on behavioral problems of students with intellectual disabilities
Narges Adibsereshki
Abstract:   (164 Views)
Background: Children with intellectual disabilities, in addition to deficits in adaptive skills, experience behavioral problems that may lead to communication, social, emotional‑affective, academic, and other difficulties. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of self-management program training on behavioral problems in students with intellectual disabilities.
Methods: In this experimental research, a pre-test, post-test design with a control group was utilized. The statistical population included of all students with intellectual disabilities aged 11 to 15 years in Fars Province who were enrolled in special education schools during the academic year 2021-2022. The sample consisted of 50 students with intellectual disabilities who were identified through convenience sampling and assigned to experimental and control groups randomly (25 individuals each). To collect data, the Achenbach Behavioral–Emotional Problems Questionnaire (2003) was used. The experimental group received 14 sessions of 60-minute self-management program training, while no intervention was provided for the control group. The research data were analyzed using one-way and multivariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
Results: The results indicated that the scores of post-test average significantly decreased in internalized and externalized problems compared to the pre-test (p > ./001).
Conclusion: It seems that implementing self-management training as a structured program can be recommended to reduce internalized and externalized behavioral problems in students with intellectual disabilities. The findings of the present study have shown the need for officials to pay serious attention to the behavioral problems of students with intellectual disabilities and appropriate intervention such as self-management training program for them.
