Background and Objective: The first permanent molar is the first permanent tooth to erupt in the mouths of children, and the health of this tooth can be a good basis for evaluating the oral health status of children. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parents' awareness of the existence of the first permanent molar and its caries status in 7-10-year-old children referred to the Pediatric Dentistry Department of Shahid Sadoughi Yazd Dental School in 2022.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-cross-sectional study was conducted on parents who referred to the Pediatric Dentistry Department of Shahid Sadoughi Yazd Dental School for dental services for their children in 2022. The samples were entered into the study conveniently and completed the questionnaire. Then their child's teeth were examined and the DMF6 index was recorded. Data were analyzed using SPSS22 statistical software and Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis statistical tests.
Results: A total of 175 children and their parents participated in this study, including 22 fathers (12.6%) and 153 mothers (87.4%). 152 parents (86.9%) were aware of the presence of the first permanent molar in their children's mouths. The mean DMF6 index in children was 0.94 ± 0.88 with a range of 4-1. There was no significant statistical difference in the mean DMF6 index of children based on parents' awareness of the first permanent molar (P-value = 0.058).
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, parents' awareness of the existence of the first permanent molar in their children's mouths was high, but this awareness did not have a significant effect on the mean DMF6 index in children.
