Abstract: (5 Views)
Background and purpose: The rate of readmissions among cardiac patients is significantly increasing and, according to some reports, may account for up to 50% of total hospital admissions. This issue has been observed in both developed and developing countries, including Iran. Readmission refers to a patient’s return to the hospital due to inadequate or incomplete treatment and may occur multiple times. This phenomenon imposes considerable costs on the healthcare system and, on the other hand, the readmission rate of cardiac patients is an important indicator of the quality of medical care. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of readmissions and to investigate the associated factors in cardiac patients admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ardabil. Materials: This descriptive-analytical study included 400 medical records of cardiac patients admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ardabil during the second half of 2019, selected by simple random sampling. Data regarding the number of admissions, reason for admission, age, gender, place of residence (urban or rural), type of treatment (medical or surgical), length of stay, comorbidities, acute or chronic condition status, and outcome of admission were extracted from the records using a researcher-designed checklist.. Results: The frequency of readmission among cardiac patients was 39.5% (158 patients). The majority of readmitted cardiac patients were male (51.9%, 82 patients) and over 70 years old (49%, 196 patients). The most frequent reasons for readmission were chronic heart failure (26.6%, 42 patients), unstable angina (16.4%, 26 patients), and coronary artery disease (14.6%, 23 patients). Most readmitted patients had a history of hypertension (44%, 11 patients). The length of stay for most readmitted patients was between 2 to 5 days (62%, 98 patients). Conclusion: Considering the high frequency of readmission in cardiac patients and the determining role of admission causes and length of stay in its occurrence, it appears that improving the process of diagnosis and management of the main causes of admission as well as determining an appropriate length of hospital stay can significantly reduce readmissions. This, in addition to reducing treatment costs, reflects an improvement in the quality of healthcare services and requires higher diligence from healthcare staff to avoid premature discharge and to complete the treatment process.
