Abstract: (100 Views)
The theory of Gerotranscendence, first introduced by Lars Tornstam in 1989, offers a novel perspective on the aging process and the psychological, cognitive, and social transformation of older adults. According to this theory, the elderly, through the natural course of aging, undergo a redefinition of fundamental life concepts such as death, time, space, and the self. They tend to shift toward a more cosmic outlook, decreased egocentrism, increased altruism, enjoyment of simple experiences, and a greater need for solitude and inner peace. These changes, which can be considered part of the psychological growth of the elderly, often go unnoticed by healthcare providers, caregivers, and even family members, and are sometimes misinterpreted as symptoms of mental illness. As a result, inappropriate responses may occur, leading to diminished quality of life and psychological distress in older adults. Therefore, familiarizing health teams with the concepts of gerotranscendence and a proper understanding of the aging process is a crucial step toward improving caregiving services and promoting the mental health of the elderly. It is recommended that these concepts be incorporated into in-service training and health promotion programs.
