Abstract:   (70 Views)
Background and purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is recognized as one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. It is estimated that approximately 80% of these patients suffer from at least one other chronic disease. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia and its associated factors in patients with COPD.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, 70 patients with COPD hospitalized at Afzalipour Hospital in Kerman were selected as the study population. A spirometry device was used to confirm the diagnosis of COPD. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, with the independent t-test applied for quantitative variables and the chi-square test for qualitative variables.
Results: This study showed a prevalence of 15.7% for iron deficiency anemia in COPD patients. In this research, 11 patients (15.7%) had iron deficiency anemia, and 3 patients (4.3%) had anemia due to gastrointestinal malignancies. Regarding the severity of the disease, 20 patients (28.6%) had mild disease, 2 patients (2.9%) had moderate disease, 22 patients (31.4%) had severe disease, and 26 patients (37.1%) had very severe disease.
Conclusion: Overall, this study showed that the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in COPD patients was 15.7%, and only the severity of the disease was associated with iron deficiency anemia.
