Abstract:   (7 Views)
Background: Suicide among children and adolescents is considered a serious mental health crisis. Given the rising number of suicide attempts at a young age, identifying risk factors can aid in the design of effective preventive interventions. This study aimed to identify risk factors for suicide attempts among children and adolescents aged 10 to 16 who were hospitalized at Bu-Ali Hospital in Ardabil.

Mthods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted during 2024–2025 on all adolescents aged 10–16 who attempted suicide and were admitted to the emergency department of Bouali Hospital in Ardabil. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires, including the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), MOS Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), and the Parenting Styles Inventory (PSI). Data collection was performed through interviews with the adolescents and/or their guardians. Due to descriptive nature of data, we used only the descriptive statistical methods in analyses data in SPSS version 24.

Results: More than 60% of the adolescents exhibited low self-esteem. The mean score for childhood trauma was 5.62, with the highest mean recorded in the emotional neglect dimension. The predominant parenting style was "authoritative," with a mean score of 44.27. Regarding social support, the highest score was observed in tangible support (approximately 70% of the total scale range); this finding indicates that the adolescents studied received a relatively favorable level of material and behavioral assistance from their families and those around them. In contrast, levels of emotional and informational support (52.22%), affection or the expression of love and care (56.33%), and positive social interaction (50.83%) were reported as merely moderate.

Conclusion: Findings revealed generally poor psychosocial profiles among adolescents who attempted suicide. Although no significant associations were observed between variables, the results underscore the urgent need for educational, supportive, and psychological interventions targeting this vulnerable population.
