Management and Care of Burn Patients in War and Crisis Situations: A Review of Burn Types and Therapeutic Interventions

Burns are among the most common injuries worldwide, potentially causing skin damage and, in severe cases, involvement of vital body systems. According to the World Health Organization, more than 11 million people globally require medical care for burns annually, and approximately 18,000 die each year. In war settings, due to the use of incendiary weapons, explosions, and exposure to chemical and thermal agents, the severity and extent of burns are generally greater than in civilian cases. This underscores the critical need for health system preparedness to manage and treat burns during crises. Educating healthcare providers and the public about thermal, electrical, chemical, and lightning-induced burns can reduce mortality, improve patients’ quality of life, and prevent psychological and social consequences.
