Background and purpose: Headache is one of the common complaints of patients referring to all medical centers, especially neurology clinics and offices. which greatly affects the quality of people's lives. In examining the cause of headache, we often come across patients who have hypoplasia of cerebral veins. Venous hypoplasia is considered one of the normal anatomical variations. To determine the frequency and types of headache and clinical conditions related to cerebral venous hypoplasia in patients referred to Alavi Hospital in 2022.
methods: This study was designed cross-sectionally. All patients hospitalized in the neurology department of Alavi hospital in Ardabil in 2022 who underwent MRV and the results of venous hypoplasia were reported in them were included in the study. Patients were examined for symptoms including headache, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting. The collected information was entered into SPSS version 24 software with the necessary coding and analyzed by using statistical methods.
Results: Ninety-five patients (68.4% female) with an average age of 45.1 years were included in the study. Migraine headache, cluster headache and vomiting were the most frequent clinical symptoms with 43.2%, 35.8% and 32.6%, respectively. Migraine headache was significantly higher in people under 40 years old and tension headache in people over 60 years old.
Conclusion: The results of this study due to its less sample size showed that, Vascular examination and MRV imaging may contribute as a complementary tool in diagnosing the underlying cause of common neurological clinical complaints such as headache, diplopia and vomiting in patients.
